The German School of Ann Arbor turned 15!
|
Welcome!
The German School Ann Arbor opened its classrooms for the first time in 2008 when a group of dedicated parents started the Saturday school for their children. Since then, the school and its offerings have grown significantly. In addition to regular German lessons, students can also attend many creative classes, summer camps, and also use our library. Traditions at the German School Ann Arbor
It is important to us to introduce our students to the many German traditions so they can experience a bit of German culture together. This includes, e.g., gifting each student a school cone on their first day of school, a tradition that goes back to the 19th century. Pictured here is the Kindergarten class with their beloved school cones.
With the upcoming St. Martin event on November 12, 2022, we are celebrating another German tradition. After dark, we light the candles in our lanterns and sing traditional St. Martin's songs in German while walking around the neighborhood in a little parade. Please find here our St. Martin songs!
In the spirit of St. Marin who shared his cloak with a poor beggar, we will be collecting food and other items to be donated for people who might need a bit of extra help this winter. This year’s donation will go to “SOS Community Services” in Ypsilanti.

Project Day 2021
German without borders and states of German speaking countries
Who really likes to work her way through boring grammar topics or long word lists? Not the students at the DSAA, but they also don’t have to do so every Saturday. The teachers at our school prepare material in an interesting and exciting way so learning never becomes boring. One of the methods used is the project day. Since 2015 the German School of Ann Arbor has engaged the students in this kind of learning, and due to the pandemic the projects will be displayed again online. Thank you to our webmaster Christian who chose a brilliant way to portray all the different projects. Students and teachers will visit the projects and talk about them on the last day of class. Parents and guardians are welcome to have a look at them and enjoy them with their kids. Use this opportunity to talk about them with your kids in German. We have some really great projects. A big thank you also goes to the teachers to make it all come together.
Open House 2021
Get a first impression of what is happening at our school and see which goals we are trying to achieve with our German lessons at the German School of Ann Arbor: please "visit" our Open House. We are introducing the school, the teachers, the students and classes. We will show you how our teachers present an interesting way of learning for all grades the in-person as well as the on-line. If you are interested in seeing how our parents support us and help us grow the community of German speaking families at the DSAA, make sure you stay until the end of the presentation. Come and join us during the tour!

Mardi Gras in Cologne 2021
At the Deutsche Schule Ann Arbor it is important to keep German traditions alive and to celebrate German events. Carnival/Mardi Gras is a very special cultural event for our students who have connections to several different German cities. It was cancelled in almost all cities in Germany this year. However due to our connections to the event committee “Festkomitee Kölner Karneval” we have access to special activities that were created for students in Cologne, Germany during lock-down.
Enjoy this concert which was created for all school age students.
If you’d rather only watch part of it and learn what “The triumvirate of Cologne” is and what its tasks are, please enjoy the cartoon fairy tale “The miracle of the 5th season” explained for students.
The highlight of the Carnival of Cologne this year was created as a puppet theater ( German video Puppentheater). Starting at 2pm in Cologne /8:00am EST, Monday, February 15, 2021 the “Rose Monday Parade” will make its way through the backstages of the city center of Cologne in miniature format and you can be part of it: “Rose Monday” in Cologne: The most unique parade!
With these activities we hope to bring some joy to the families of the DSAA during the winter break and to follow the motto of the Carnival of Cologne this year:
Nur zusamme sin mer Fastelovend – Nur zusammen, sind wir Karneval – Only together we are carnival!
Kölle Alaaf!
