Classes and Exams
Classes
PlaygroupAge: 0 - 10 years
Playgroup takes place at the S&L Farm (S&L Bauernhof). There, children get to know the animals, the environment, and life on a farm. They play, learn, and do crafts with other German-speaking children while the German language is promoted through play. With German songs, rhymes, stories, and movement games, the children, accompanied by a parent or guardian, are introduced to the German language with great joy and lots of fun. |
Preschool
Age: from around 3 years
Our preschool children learn and deepen their German language skills through play. They sing, play and talk to one another, read books and craft together, and work on exciting tasks, together and individually, at various learning stations. The structure of the class is inspired by preschools in Germany and each session focuses on a specific topic. |
Kindergarten
Age: from around 5 years
In our kindergarten class, we playfully promote understanding and expression in the German language. In subject-related lessons, we offer kindergarteners the opportunity to expand and deepen their knowledge, in accordance with their individual language requirements. We prepare the students for structured use of the language. For kindergarteners, recognizing structures means converting letters into sounds and writing, as well as hearing initial letters, syllables and rhymes. We promote fine motor skills, logical thinking and concentration while encouraging students to speak freely. |
1st - 12th grade classes DaM and DaF
In order to meet the different requirements of students, each grade is divided into two classes: “German as a mother tongue” (DaM) and “German as a foreign language” (DaF). Both classes are taught in German. The most important differences between DaM and DaF are explained here.
The following table explains how the teaching content is taught in class. Details about the exams can be found below.

The following German language proficiency assessments and certificates of the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad can be taken at the DSAA. Please see the table above to find out which assessments are taken in which grade.
German Language Proficiency Assessments A1 and A2
Purpose of the assessments:
German Language Certificate I and II (DSD I and II)
The German Language Certificate (Deutsches Sprachdiplom DSD) of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs is the only school program in the Federal Republic of Germany for German as a foreign language abroad. The certificate can be acquired upon passing an exam after several years of German lessons. If a student passes the examinations for the "German Language Certificate - First Level (DSD I)", his/her German language skills are equal to the level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GeR). A DSD I certificate is proof of the necessary German language skills to access preparatory college in Germany. The exam for the "German Language Certificate - Second Level (DSD II)" tests the student’s knowledge of German at levels B2 / C1 of the GeR. A DSD II certificate is proof of the German language skills required to study at a German university. The German Language Certificate from the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs is currently being taken in over 70 countries by more than 80,000 candidates per year.
German Language Proficiency Assessments A1 and A2

- The language proficiency assessments help to promote the implementation of the competency-based framework and the work plan for DaF within the school.
- Language proficiency assessments provide information about the performance level of the entire class, and the individual students.
- In particular, the international language proficiency assessment A2 prepares students for the German Language examination format (DSD).
